Ukraine intends to establish a new defense line in the Black Sea, utilizing interceptor drones launched from various platforms, including naval drones.
This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting with graduates and cadets of the Naval Institute.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is developing a new maritime defense line, which will be a crucial component of the southern regions’ protection. According to him, the plan is to deploy interceptor drones from diverse platforms, such as unmanned marine vehicles.
“The know-how we require is to have a defense line at sea and deploy interceptor drones there from various platforms, so we have a line protecting Odesa, Greater Odesa, and the entire region from the air,” declared the head of state.
The President emphasized that the current warfare compels Ukraine to constantly seek innovative technological solutions. He noted that the mass production of interceptor drones is already underway, and the subsequent step will involve their integration into a unified maritime defense system.
According to Zelenskyy, the most valuable asset of the Ukrainian Navy is the unique combat experience gained almost daily. This experience enables the creation of solutions not yet available in other countries.
The President highlighted that Ukrainian naval drones have already proven their effectiveness during the war. Their deployment has forced Russia to withdraw a significant portion of its fleet from the Ukrainian coast, facilitating the operation of the maritime food corridor. Furthermore, Ukrainian naval drones have demonstrated the capability to strike not only ships but also aerial targets, including Russian helicopters.
The president indicated that in the future, the Ukrainian Navy is envisioned as a high-tech system integrating traditional warships, aircraft, surface, and underwater drones. The next phase of development will involve the widespread use of artificial intelligence and remote control of equipment from the shore.

As a reminder, a new brigade of mine-clearing ships is being formed within the Ukrainian Navy. Zelenskyy announced that the unit will operate at sea and assist international partners when necessary. A decree has also been signed establishing a Naval Academy in Odesa.
Additionally, Zelenskyy congratulated the United States on its 250th anniversary and thanked Americans for their support of Ukraine in the fight against Russia’s full-scale war, specifically mentioning the Patriot air defense systems that reliably protect Ukrainian lives.
