Соціальні мережі для дітей під забороною: фахівці застерігають про зворотний ефект

British cybersecurity experts have criticized the government’s plan to completely ban social media for teenagers under 16 due to the high risk of confidential data leaks.

Ban on social media for children

A ban on social media for children carries hidden dangers

The UK government, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has announced a large-scale campaign to restrict access to popular internet platforms for underage users. A total ban on the use of social networks for children under 16 is officially set to take effect in the spring of 2027.

UNILAD writes about this controversial initiative.

Criticism of the Government Plan and New Threats

The British Prime Minister believes that social networks have an extremely harmful impact on the mental health of the younger generation. The official emphasized that parents are witnessing firsthand how internet platforms make their children completely unhappy.

Despite public support, technology experts are sounding the alarm about the potential catastrophic consequences of such a radical decision. They warn that the blocking will force teenagers to seek out unregulated parts of the internet, which will quickly lead to mass personal data leaks.

Professor of Computer Science Alan Woodward noted that it is currently very difficult to imagine the real practical implementation of this ban. “I don’t think the government truly understands where it’s going with many of these things,” stated expert Jasleen Chagger.

Details of Future Restrictions for Teenagers

According to the new rules, children under 16 will not be able to create new accounts on most popular entertainment platforms. Teenagers who already have registered pages on the banned social networks will face forced deactivation of their profiles.

Famous giants such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, X, TikTok, and the video hosting platform YouTube will fall under the strict ban. However, the government will leave unrestricted access to secure messaging messengers, including WhatsApp and Signal, for underage users.

Politicians are also considering the possibility of introducing additional restrictions and potential curfews for young people under 18. At the same time, the authorities are shifting the responsibility for developing age verification mechanisms directly to technology companies and third-party identification services.

Recall that children in Ukraine also want to have social networks “blocked.” Corresponding restrictions are already being prepared in the Verkhovna Rada. The reasons cited are the risks of recruitment by the Russian Federation and dangerous content.
