Ukraine is interested in accelerating search and exhumation works at the burial sites of the Volhynia tragedy victims.
This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He stressed that establishing the full truth and dignified commemoration of the fallen is a shared duty.
In his address, the head of state recalled that on this day, Ukraine and Poland traditionally commemorate the civilians who perished during the events of World War II in Volhynia. Representatives of both states participated in joint prayers in both Ukraine and Poland.
The President announced that a new phase of work will commence in the very near future.
“Ukraine is doing its part to honestly establish the facts regarding those killed in those years: where there were villages and where there were fallen, search operations are being conducted. Ukraine is interested in accelerating them. In two days, exhumation works will begin in the villages of Ostrivky and Volya Ostrovetska. Full truth and Christian commemoration of the fallen are what is needed,” Zelenskyy said.
The President also emphasized that today, Ukraine and Poland have a common enemy that poses a threat to both states.
“Speaking about what happened, we must not question the future of our nations – the future of Ukraine, Poland, the future of our entire Europe,” the head of state stressed.
According to Zelenskyy, it is the preservation of historical memory, the establishment of facts, and mutual respect that should strengthen the partnership between Ukraine and Poland, especially in the context of ongoing Russian aggression.
