The Russian Federation continues to deploy hazardous ordnance against Ukraine. The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has documented further instances of the use of “Geras-2” drones equipped with depleted uranium components in the Sumy region.

The Russian forces persist in utilizing drones with radioactive materials for their assaults on Ukraine. Counterintelligence officers and investigators from the SSU have officially recorded two additional occurrences of “Geras-2” attack drones being outfitted with depleted uranium elements.

Russians Attacking Ukraine with Radioactive Drones: SSU Documents Cases
According to the SSU, the adversary launched strikes on the Sumy region twice in April 2026 using these drones. Investigators have ascertained that during intense shelling, Russians employed R-60M air-to-air guided missiles as the warhead for their unmanned aerial vehicles.
Investigative teams and emergency services were deployed to the impact sites. During radiation measurements, State Emergency Service specialists detected gamma radiation levels of 8.3 and 10.5 μSv/h from the recovered fragments. This level significantly exceeds the natural background radiation and poses a direct threat to the lives and health of civilians.
Forensic ballistic and chemical analyses, initiated by the SSU, have corroborated the presence of hazardous substances.
“Following the examination commissioned by the Security Service, it has been established that the warhead of the Russian missiles contains depleted uranium strike elements with a total mass of 2810 grams. The substance has been identified as uranium-234, uranium-235, and uranium-238,” the SSU stated.
Upon completion of the investigative procedures, the detected radioactive components were safely neutralized by specialized units.
Currently, SSU investigators are conducting a pre-trial investigation within the framework of a criminal proceeding under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – violation of the laws and customs of war. Law enforcement officials are identifying specific officials and military personnel of the Russian Federation involved in the organization and execution of these attacks.
This is not the first such incident; in April, SSU counterintelligence documented the use of radioactive munitions by Russians during attacks on the Chernihiv region.
Due to the significant danger posed by depleted uranium, law enforcement and rescue personnel urge residents to exercise maximum caution and vigilance. In the event of discovering any drone fragments, missile debris, or other explosive devices, do not approach them under any circumstances, do not touch them with your hands, and do not attempt to move them.

Russians Testing New “Invisible” Drone
As a reminder, Russia is testing a new winged-type strike drone controlled via fiber optics, which is being presented as an equivalent to the “Molniya” drone with a flight range of up to 50 kilometers.
The apparatus is slated for launch and serial production, as announced by Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov, a Ukrainian expert in electronic warfare systems.
The core concept behind this development is to render the flight of the UAV, carrying a warhead up to 10 kilograms, virtually undetectable by Ukrainian electronic intelligence and to minimize the possibility of its suppression.
The transmission of video signals via fiber optics ensures high image quality, enabling drone control at low altitudes while circumventing obstacles, which further complicates its detection by radar stations.
