July 16 (July 29), in the Orthodox calendar, is the day of remembrance of the holy hieromartyr Antinogen and his ten disciples. Saint Antinogen lived at the end of the 3rd – beginning of the 4th century, at a time when the Roman Empire was experiencing one of the most brutal waves of persecution against Christians. He was the bishop of the city of Sebaste in Lesser Armenia and enjoyed great respect among believers. Known for his wisdom, humility, and deep faith, he tirelessly preached the Gospel, supported the destitute, and strengthened Christians during times of persecution.
According to tradition, the saint’s life was filled with prayer, fasting, and sacrificial service. He did not seek earthly glory, but dedicated all his strength to the spiritual upbringing of people and the establishment of the Church.
By the emperor’s decree, mass persecution of Christians began. Rulers demanded sacrifices to pagan gods, and those who refused faced torture and death.
When the soldiers came for Antinogen, he did not try to escape or hide. On the contrary, the saint accepted his arrest peacefully, knowing that true life begins in the Kingdom of God. Ten of his closest disciples, who also did not renounce their faith, were arrested along with him.
The saint’s disciples were raised in his example. They knew well that loyalty to Christ could cost them their lives, but not one of them agreed to worship idols.
Before their execution, they were repeatedly urged to renounce their faith, promised freedom, wealth, and high positions. However, all ten remained steadfast. They replied that they could not exchange eternal life for short-term earthly benefits.
Saint Antinogen supported his spiritual children, strengthening them with prayer and words of hope. He reminded them of Christ’s promise that whoever endures to the end will be saved.
After numerous tortures, the ruler ordered the execution of all eleven confessors of the faith.
Before his death, Saint Antinogen turned to God with a prayer for his disciples, for the Church, and for all who would read the Gospel in the future and remain faithful to Christ.
