Following the summit in Ankara, the leaders of NATO member states released a joint declaration, reaffirming their steadfast support for Ukraine and declaring Russia a persistent threat to transatlantic security.

This is evidenced by the declaration document.

The document emphasizes that Ukraine “makes an important contribution to transatlantic security,” and the Alliance members “stand united in our unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.”

However, the declaration does not mention the prospects of Ukraine’s accession to NATO.

What the NATO Declaration Entails

Key provisions of the document include:

  • The Alliance leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the principle of collective defense enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty;

  • Russia was identified as a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security, and terrorism as a persistent threat;

  • NATO announced new defense procurements exceeding $50 billion;

  • European countries and Canada, along with the US, will assume greater responsibility for strengthening the Alliance’s defense capabilities;

  • Allies will work towards creating a common transatlantic combat cloud infrastructure and implementing artificial intelligence models in the military domain.

The declaration also states that European allies and Canada provide a significant portion of security assistance to Ukraine. By 2026, NATO plans to provide Ukraine with €70 billion in military aid, equipment, and training support.

By 2027, allies intend to ensure at least a similar level of support.

Separately, the declaration notes that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons and must guarantee freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite confirming long-term support for Ukraine, the issue of the country’s future membership in NATO is not mentioned in the final document.

For reference, the US President, during a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressed confidence that Washington is capable of reaching agreements even in the most complex international conflicts.

Meanwhile, Western media reports that Ukraine is no longer promoting a specific peace plan to end the war with Russia.
