7 методів зробити спальню прохолоднішою влітку: спимо зручно навіть у сильну спечу

When the temperature at night doesn’t drop, sleep becomes a trial. But a few simple changes in the bedroom can noticeably reduce the feeling of heat without expensive renovations or complex cooling systems.

Summer often seems like the ideal season until it comes to sleep. Heat builds up in the room, the air becomes heavy, and falling asleep can be harder than it seems. Real Simple magazine has gathered tips on how to make your bedroom cooler at night and reduce overheating during the day.

And the good news is that most solutions don’t require high-tech equipment — just a little attention to the details we often overlook.

Remove Hidden Heat Sources

One of the simplest steps is to turn off and unplug unnecessary electronics. TVs, laptops, monitors, and chargers generate heat, even in standby mode.

In a small bedroom, several plugged-in devices can significantly raise the temperature. Turning off appliances you’re not using reduces overheating while also saving energy.

Control Your Windows

An open window during the day can work against you. It’s better to keep windows closed during hot weather and only open them at night when it’s cooler outside. Another trick is cross-ventilation, where you open windows on opposite sides of the house to create a natural draft.

It’s also recommended to check windows for air leaks. A simple test is to hold a candle flame or incense smoke near the cracks and see if the air moves. If there are drafts, they can be sealed with caulk from a hardware store.

Blackout Curtains

During the day, curtains should be closed, especially if the windows face east, south, or west. This helps prevent walls, floors, and furniture from heating up and reduces the load on the air conditioner.

However, there’s an important nuance — the material. Dark and thick fabrics can actually absorb heat and act like a “radiator” in the room. It’s better to choose light-colored blackout curtains, such as white ones, and place them as close to the glass as possible to reflect sunlight.

Maximize Airflow

Air circulation is key to a cool bedroom. In homes with limited ventilation systems, it’s best to keep doors open to allow air to move more freely. However, if each room has separate ventilation ducts, it might be better to keep doors closed for a more stable temperature.

We also debunk the common myth that closing air vents in other rooms doesn’t “redirect” cool air into the bedroom but merely creates pressure in the system and reduces airflow.

Proper Fan Placement

Fans don’t lower the air temperature but create a cooling sensation. Therefore, they should only be used when you are in the room.

If your windows are open, one fan can be directed outwards to push out warm air, and another can be used to draw in cool night air.

Ceiling fans should be switched to rotate counter-clockwise — this creates a downward airflow and a “wind chill” effect.

Humidity Control

High humidity makes the heat feel even more intense. Reducing moisture levels helps the room “feel” cooler even without changing the temperature.

However, dehumidifiers have a drawback, as they can slightly warm the space while operating. Therefore, it’s important to simultaneously address the causes of humidity, such as repairing leaks, using exhaust fans, and running the air conditioner when possible.

Bed Placement Matters

Even the placement of your bed affects sleep quality. Avoid walls that get heated by the sun during the day. Materials like brick store heat throughout the day and release it at night. As a result, you are essentially sleeping next to a “hidden radiator.”

Cooling a bedroom in the summer isn’t about one magic trick, but a combination of small solutions that work well together. From unplugging unused electronics to the right curtains and smart ventilation — every step reduces the heat load and makes sleep more comfortable. Sometimes, the best air conditioner isn’t a device, but a well-organized space.
