Pruning peonies in the summer is a swift and straightforward procedure that involves removing faded flowers. This is done to prevent the plant from developing fruits or forming seeds. If peonies do manage to produce seeds, they will bloom less profusely the following year. Therefore, the primary objective of summer bush pruning is to ensure their equally magnificent and striking flowering next year.
During the pruning of peonies in July, it is advisable to remove all unopened buds. If they have not yet blossomed, they will only unnecessarily burden the plant. The time to trim the leaves and shoots, however, will arrive at the end of August and in September.
Pruning Peonies in August and September
The subsequent pruning of peonies can be carried out in late August, when the plant’s foliage begins to yellow and lose its attractive appearance. Do not cut the green leaves yet, as the plant requires them for the development of a healthy, vigorous bulb. Thus, it is necessary to wait until the end of summer to trim the peony’s leaves and shoots.
Late August and early September also present the ideal time for transplanting the plant to a new location or for dividing tubers and propagating the flowers. The onset of autumn is an opportune period for this type of treatment, as the tubers are already fully developed, allowing us to be confident that we will not harm the plant.
