Hungary does not support the European Union’s proposal that Ukrainian men of conscription age should not be granted temporary protection.

This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar in parliament, according to “RBC.Ukraine.”

During a parliamentary session, MP László Toroczkai from the Mi Hazánk party asked Magyar how he felt about the European Commission’s proposal not to grant temporary protection to Ukrainian men of conscription age if they do not have permission to leave the country due to military obligations.

Toroczkai justified his question by stating that Budapest must express its position because there is a Hungarian community living in the Zakarpattia region who would suffer from this. According to him, such men could be sent “over 1000 kilometers from their homeland to the front” as “cannon fodder.”

In turn, Péter Magyar replied that Hungary’s position had already been voiced at a meeting of the Council of the EU on Internal Affairs in Luxembourg. Minister of Internal Affairs Gábor Pozsgay stated that they, along with several other countries, do not support the European Commission’s proposal.

Magyar emphasized that even if the new rules are approved at the EU level, they will come into effect approximately in March 2027. At the same time, this will not deprive Hungary of the right to independently grant refugee status to people arriving in the country to escape war or mobilization.

“Every Hungarian compatriot can count on the ‘Tissa’ government, both here and abroad,” Magyar stated.

Recall that last week, the European Commission came forward with a **proposal to extend the duration of temporary protection** for Ukrainian citizens until March 2028. However, there are exceptions regarding newly arrived men aged 23-60 who are subject to mobilization. The EU insists that the new proposal concerns not men, but specifically — mobilized Ukrainian citizens.
