The strawberry season is considered one of the most anticipated at the beginning of summer. However, even the best variety will not reveal its full flavor if the berries are picked too early. Experts emphasize that for maximum sweetness, strawberries must fully ripen on the plant.

This was reported by martha stewart.

The ripening period of strawberries depends on the climate and growing conditions. After flowering, the berries first remain light green and then turn red. Gardeners recommend harvesting only when the fruits have fully and uniformly reddened.

Experts note that strawberries achieve maximum sweetness, rich flavor, and good texture precisely after full ripening. At the same time, it is not worth delaying the harvest: although darker berries are often sweeter, they soften faster, and overripe fruits can begin to spoil or become moldy.

Experts emphasize that strawberries do not ripen after being picked. Therefore, berries picked prematurely will not become sweeter during storage. This is precisely why it is recommended to wait until the fruits are fully colored directly in the garden bed.

The fruiting time also depends on the variety. For example, June-bearing varieties usually yield their main harvest in late spring or early summer over two to three weeks. Everbearing varieties fruit in two waves—spring and autumn, although they usually have fewer berries. Day-neutral varieties, on the other hand, can produce harvests throughout the season.

It is best to pick strawberries by hand. To do this, carefully pinch or break off the stem a few centimeters from the berry. It is not recommended to pull or squeeze the fruits, as the delicate flesh is easily damaged.

When harvesting, the berries should be placed in the container as carefully as possible. Strawberries are easily bruised, so careless handling can shorten their shelf life and worsen their appearance.

After picking, it is advisable to immediately move the fruits to a cool place and put them in the refrigerator. Fully ripe strawberries stay fresh for only a few days, and at room temperature, they spoil even faster.

If the berries need to be stored for a long time, they can be frozen. Before that, wash the strawberries, remove the stems, and cut them if necessary. First, freeze the berries on a baking sheet, and then transfer them to containers or bags for further storage in the freezer.

Recall that for strawberries to stay fresh longer, do not wash them before storing, do not remove the caps in advance, and keep the berries in the refrigerator in a shallow container with a paper towel.
