Yesterday, June 19, a railway accident occurred near the town of Bedford (Great Britain) — two passenger trains collided. The driver of one of the trains died, and almost 90 passengers were injured.
This was reported by the publications Daily Mail and The Guardian.
According to the publication, the accident happened when a train heading to St. Pancras crashed into the rear of another train. It has been preliminarily established that the vehicles collided when the train driver was reporting a malfunction to the repair service by phone.
Currently, the police are investigating the version of a possible breakdown in the train that was moving ahead. Investigators are clarifying whether there was a malfunction in the automatic warning system of the train standing at the station, which activates the brakes if the driver does not respond to the approaching red stop signal.
After the accident, East Midlands Railway train services to and from London St. Pancras station were restricted for the rest of the day. Railway workers emphasize that the scale and nature of the accident, involving new trains on the modernized Midland Main Line, came as a shock to the industry.
According to the East of England Ambulance Service, almost 90 passengers were injured: 11 people received “very serious” injuries, 22 received serious injuries, and 56 received minor injuries.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reacted to the incident. He expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased.
“Extremely disturbing reports of a collision between two passenger trains near Bedford. First and foremost, my thoughts are with the family of the person who lost their life and with those who sustained serious injuries. I am grateful to the emergency services for their swift response to this tragic incident,” Starmer wrote.
