Russian President Volodymyr Putin has spoken out against European leaders acting as intermediaries in negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. Instead, the Russian leader insists on a peace agreement, which he allegedly agreed upon with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska.

Bloomberg reports on this.

“How can the European Union or individual EU countries be mediators when they are directly aiding a country with which we are in armed conflict? Mediation implies neutrality,” he stated.

Putin reiterated that he reached an agreement with Trump on a compromise peace deal at a summit in Anchorage in August 2025. According to him, EU countries can contribute to ending the war “not by supplying weapons, but by attempting to persuade the Kyiv authorities to agree to compromises.”

According to Bloomberg, representatives of Europe’s three largest economies – Germany, France, and the United Kingdom – have been discussing potential negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine. Sources speaking anonymously to the agency added that this issue has also been discussed with the Ukrainian side.

We remind you that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote an open letter to Putin and proposed a meeting to end the war.

This became known from the website of the Office of the President, where the letter was published.

In it, the Ukrainian president suggests ending the war and holding a meeting with Putin. According to him, there are countries ready to host this meeting, including Switzerland, Turkey, and Arab countries.

“The front line now is the line from which diplomacy must begin,” Zelenskyy wrote.

The president proposes a format for a future meeting to end the war: first, Ukraine and Russia, then other participants – primarily Europe and the USA for security guarantees.

Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Putin would be informed about the letter later. Peskov also reiterated that if Zelenskyy wants a meeting, he can come to Moscow.

The last round of trilateral negotiations between Kyiv, Washington, and Moscow took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 26. Particular attention was paid to the economic bloc and long-term support mechanisms for Ukraine.
