Singer Oksana Voyage, a former star of the Ukrainian stage in the 2000s, who recently revealed why she disappeared from the scene, spoke about her disappointment in acquaintances after the full-scale war began, and how some of them echoed Russian propaganda narratives after moving to the Russian Federation.

After February 24, 2022, the artist says she started viewing people from her past differently. Some acquaintances vanished without explanation. Others abruptly changed their rhetoric. Some had already relocated to Russia earlier, concealing it. Unexpected calls from those she trusted became particularly painful. It was one such contact that caused her emotional shock.

“I never had many friends, but I had one acquaintance whom I genuinely respected. He was a renowned folklorist, worked with Ukrainian music, recorded songs, and promoted culture. Moreover, he was so pro-Ukrainian that it was difficult to speak Russian with him; it seemed he didn’t understand it. And then, after the start of the major war, he moved to Russia, where, as it turned out, he had some business. I didn’t know about this then. One day, he called me: ‘I want to talk about your song ‘You’ll Return Alive’. I was happy because at that moment I was receiving many warm responses about this work, which I created at the beginning of the invasion. But the conversation took a different turn. He asked, ‘Do you even understand who attacked whom?’ I didn’t even grasp what he was talking about. I asked him to clarify,” the singer told OBOZ.UA.

The singer admits that the conversation then devolved into a blatant repetition of talking points, which she heard for the first time from a close person, but in a distorted form. This became a psychological blow and a breach of trust for her.

“There was another acquaintance of mine – once perhaps my biggest fan. We used to do sports together, lived as neighbors. About twenty years ago, he married a girl from Saint Petersburg and moved to Russia. One day, he also called. At first, everything was warm: he talked about how much he loved my songs, how he still listened to them. He jokingly remarked that it was a shame I translated my repertoire into Ukrainian. Then he started repeating the same propaganda narratives. And the further we went, the scarier it became. At one point, he said he would be happy when Kyiv was wiped off the face of the earth. I was in shock. I exploded, ‘You’re a Ukrainian face, what are you talking about?’ I blocked him,” the star exclaimed indignantly.

The artist specifically emphasizes that her family has always held a clear stance regarding Ukraine, even in conversations with distant relatives from the Russian Federation. These contrasts, according to her, further exacerbate the sense of lost trust in people she has known for years.

“I never had relatives in Russia. My in-laws only have distant ones somewhere in Kuban. But they communicate rarely. I remember one phone conversation of my father-in-law with them. They told him: ‘It’s dangerous for you there, the Banderites.’ And he replied humorously, ‘Then you can be afraid of me, because I’m a Banderite myself.’ I really liked his reaction then,” the singer says with a smile.
