The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the fall of a Russian drone on a residential apartment building in the city of Galati during the night of May 29 a “serious escalation” by the Russian Federation.
This is stated in a statement by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“This incident represents a serious and irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation. Romania will take the necessary diplomatic measures in response to this serious violation of international law and its airspace,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
In Romania, a Russian drone hit an apartment building – latest news
During the night of Friday, May 29, a drone fell on the roof of an apartment building in the city of Galati, Romania. The Ministry of National Defense of Romania stated that it was a Russian drone. As a result of the explosion and fire, two people were injured, and about 70 residents were evacuated.
After detecting the aerial target at 01:19, Romanian military scrambled two F-16 fighter jets from the Fetesti airbase. A helicopter of the IAR 330 SOCAT provided support for the operation.
According to the Romanian Ministry of National Defense, the pilots had authorization to engage the target throughout the mission. The Romanian military did not destroy the Russian drone that entered the country’s airspace due to “very strict restrictions” within the army on this matter.
Romania also informed EU member states, NATO allies, and the Alliance’s Secretary General about the circumstances of the Russian drone’s fall and requested measures “to accelerate the transfer of anti-drone capabilities to Romania.”
At the same time, this is not the first instance where the consequences of Russian attacks have been felt on Romanian territory.
On April 25, fragments of explosive-laden drones were found in Galati following another attack by the Russian Federation near the border with Romania.
Several facilities were damaged at that time, and the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador to provide explanations.
